Riviera F was formed by Russian born singer Alexa
Marlen and Dutch guitarist Kairo Sin, after meeting at a
London art college. Sharing a love of bubblegum pop, trashy glamour
and impeccable style, the girls decided they must start their own band.
They made their first recordings in Alexa's bedroom on
an old 4-track, using a Casio toy keyboard and a drum machine. As their
sound developed they threw in some analogue synths and 909 beats together
with Kairo's tense angular guitars, and Alexa's icy cool vocals.
With the addition of synth man extraordinaire Logan
Sky, Riviera F's sound soon shaped up into a combination of electro
minimalism with a new wave edge and a triumphant, uplifting pop feel.
Riviera F played their first ever gig on the BBC's John
Peel Radio One show. They performed live after the (late) legendary
DJ listened to the band's demo and phoned them the next day, telling
them how much he loved their music and demanding the band to record
a session for his show.
Shortly after, waiting for the lift at Harvey Nichols
one winter afternoon, Alexa happened to bump into Duran Duran's synth
legend Nick Rhodes. After chatting to him, Nick arranged to meet
up with the band and they soon found themselves signed to Pop Cult/Tape
Modern, Stephen Duffy (Duran's first lead vocalist and Robbie
Williams writing partner) and Nick Rhodes' label.
Produced by Nick Rhodes, International Lover EP was Riviera F's
debut release and has received critical acclaim from all over Europe
and the US.
The excellent International Lover video, directed by
LA based Matt Amato (Moby, LeAnn Rimes, Coldplay) and staring
Hollywood stud Billy Zane (Titanic, Orlando, Back to the Future),
was also featured in Hollywood's Resfest film festival, alongside videos
from The Faint, and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.
Riviera F have been playing live all over the UK and
Europe, as well as playing London's hottest clubs, from Kashpoint and
Computer Blue to Fanclub and Electrogogo. Larry Tee also approached
them to play the Electroclash festival in NY. Recently the band
have played in Holland, Italy, Scotland and Finland as
well as organising their own club nights in London. 'How To Pick Up
Girls' (Catch), a popular night of disco and hi energy, and 'Club
Dollar' (Cobden Club), as featured in Mixmag and the Guardian.
Apart from being a favourite on Fashion TV (fashion
channel) and recent Dolce & Gabbana catwalk fashion shows,
Riviera F has had airplay on many UK, European and American FM and digital
radio-stations. From Radio One and XFM (UK) to Radio XY,
(US); Radio Fritz (Germany), Radio Stadsomroep Arnhem, (Holland), Pararadio,
(Hungary) and more. Riviera F have been featured in Dazed and Confused,
Nylon (US), ID, Time Out, Careless Lives, The Guardian, Very London,
Evening Standard, and The Independent.
Now We've Got Europe,
Riviera F's first US single is out on the Miami based electronic label, Kinetic
Media (home to Hong Kong Counterfeit, Soviet, Total Machina,
Mount Sims), which will also release the debut album Another
City, Another Plan in 2007. |
